Committee to Select Five Major Markets for Redevelopment in Delhi

A committee formed by the Delhi government will select five major markets here for redevelopment according to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s announcement in Rozgar’s budget for 2022-23, officials said on Monday.
The eight-member committee will submit its report by May 20, they said. Fifty major markets in Delhi including Kamla Nagar, Nehru Place, Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Karol Bagh, Khari Baoli, Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar and Palika Bazar applied for the redevelopment project.
The committee will include representatives from the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), the Department of Public Works and the Delhi Jal Board, as well as two representatives from trade associations. The panel will be led by the project manager of the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), officials said.
Brijesh Goyal, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CTI) and one of the committee members, said the panel will hold its first meeting on May 17.
Earlier, the Delhi government had invited applications from various market associations to select five markets under the redevelopment plan. The deadline for submitting online applications was May 6.
“Fifty market associations had applied under the market redevelopment plan which will be considered in the selection process. Only markets that have submitted applications will be considered for selection under the redevelopment project,” Goyal said.
The online application looked for details such as the approximate number of stores in the market; unique products, shops, food hubs in the market; five key infrastructure issues; and how the market association can help the government in the redevelopment of the market.
The retail market redevelopment project announced in the Rozgar Budget 2022-23 last month at the assembly aims to upgrade five selected markets from all over Delhi to phase 1.
The government has allocated Rs 100 crore for the program in the financial year 2022-23 and the creation of over 1.5 lakh employment opportunities is estimated through the initiative.
The DTTDC implements the redevelopment project.
The Delhi government aims to rethink, decongest and redevelop selected markets to create employment opportunities by stimulating business activities there. Goyal said market beautification should be an aspect of the redevelopment project as it will attract more visitors along with shoppers. Business will boom and more jobs will be created with an increase in footfall, he said.
He said world-class roads, improved power and sewer lines, developed parking areas, less congestion on the roads and user-friendly pedestrian paths will be part of the revamped markets.
